A dynamic variety of restaurant options has helped make Houston a prime destination for working Americans. There are few cities in the nation experiencing the type of population growth that Houston has exhibited in recent years. Roughly 35,000 people moved to Houston last year, making it the second best metro area for population growth behind only New York City. Overall, Houston's population has surged 6.7 percent in the last three years, according to Redfin, a real estate brokerage and information firm. But what exactly is drawing people to Houston? There are numerous reasons, including a growing job sector, warm climate and trendy nightlife spots for young adults. Bert Sperling, founder of Sperling's Best Places, told Forbes Houston is slowly climbing the list of cool destinations for young people. "Established places like New York … have a built-in cool crowd," Sperling said. "They are like adult playgrounds and people go there for good food and interesting events." Lofty pay, few expenses Houston offers a wide range of work options for the job sector, and the city also provides strong wages. Houston ranked No. 8 in wages in 2012, but ranked first overall among major metro areas for wages adjusted for cost of living, according to Redfin. Part of the reason Houston is so affordable is because of its low cost of living. The minimum salary required to purchase an average home in Houston was $31,298. In contrast, the minimum salary to buy an average home in Los Angeles was more than $72,000. In San Francisco, that figure was more than $115,000. But that doesn't mean Houston residents aren't well off. Redfin reported Houston ranks No. 2 for millionaires per capita throughout the U.S. and No. 18 worldwide. Slightly more than 2 percent of Houston residents are worth more than $1 million in assets. The food in Houston While it's not as renowned as Chicago, Houston has stepped up its game in the culinary fields. The city has nearly six restaurants for every 10,000 people and has a very low fast food to restaurant ratio. Houston's fast food to restaurant ratio is 1.36, which is one of the best numbers in the nation and better than Los Angeles (1.37), Minneapolis (1.39), Dallas (1.43), Chicago (1.44), Philadelphia (1.47), Washington, D.C. (1.48), Phoenix (1.49) and Baltimore (1.92). Thrillist named Houston one of the seven most underrated food cities in the county along with Asheville, North Carolina; Louisville, Kentucky; Cleveland, Detroit, San Antonio and Minneapolis. "The thing I love about Houston's food scene is the opportunities," Seth Siegal-Gardner, chef and founder of the Houston-based The Pass & Provisions, told Thrillist. "Most importantly, for the dining guest there's the opportunity to experience one of the most exciting times in Houston's food scene. The second part of that is the opportunities young up-and-coming chefs, beverage professionals, and restaurateurs have."Siegal-Gardner added a variety of neighborhoods offer different cuisines to fit the bill for any cravings."There are so many new, burgeoning neighborhoods that you can spend weeks exploring, and others that haven't changed in forever and are still putting out delicious food and drink," Siegel-Gardner said. "Whether it's grabbing a taco at our favorite truck conveniently located across the street from our favorite ice house and then catching an in-store performance at Cactus Music, or ordering the entire menu at our go-to Korean BBQ."Recovering jobs at a rapid clip Houston recovered 323 percent of the jobs lost from the Great Recession through 2014, according to Redfin, placing it atop the list ahead of Dallas (238 percent), Washington, D.C. (184 percent) and Boston (175 percent).Houston added more than three jobs for every job lost during the Great Recession.Courtest of 2M Realty News
